It’s been 10+ years that I am doing digital marketing for my clients, and every time I get a question from most of the marketing professionals and Small business owners that “SEO and Digital Marketing, Are they same?” and even most of them get confused with these two terms. It is a similar one, as most of the people are uncertain about Sales & Marketing. I have already posted an article about sales & marketing phrases earlier, so I thought let me put some words about SEO & Digital Marketing also.
In my earlier post, I have shared details about “SEO”. But, let me discuss now digital marketing also. Digital marketing is defined as marketing done through electronic means. In simple words, the devices which are connected to the Internet and marketing done through it is called Digital Marketing. Ex: Mobile (Smart Phones), Laptop, Tabs, Social Media, Search Engine and so on. Digital marketing is an umbrella containing Search Engine Optimization, SEM, Social media marketing, Blogging, Content Marketing, Mobile Marketing, Online Advertising, Email Marketing, Website Marketing, Viral Marketing, and Video Marketing and so on.
So, SEO is only a subset of digital marketing but not the same thing. “Search engine optimization (SEO) is a methodology of strategies, techniques, and tactics used to increase the number of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines”.- Google SERP.
To make it much easier, Digital Marketing consists of various methods and SEO is one of them. From the below diagram you can find it clearly about the ribs of the digital marketing umbrella.
Digital Marketing is a mixture of both paid and unpaid methods. When we talk about designations and work titles then it has different meanings and specialists. If I say that John is an SEO Specialist then it means he handles all the work related to SEO only, i.e on-page and off-page optimization. If I say, John is a Digital marketing manager, then he handles the complete wing of digital marketing inclusion of SEO also. Small and medium companies recruit candidates with complete digital marketing experience whereas large enterprises have a specialist for each of the individual wing of Digital marketing.
I feel that still, SEO has a lot of scope in parallel with Digital marketing. SEO plays a role while developing a clear digital marketing strategy. It is good to have a clear understanding of both of these.
